A magnitude-6.4 earthquake jolted the Tohoku region Saturday afternoon, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

According to the Meteorological Agency, the quake was centered at a depth of 47 kilometers off the Miyagi Prefecture coast.

The quake registered upper 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Tono, Iwate Prefecture, and lower 5 in Hanamaki and Takizawamura in the prefecture.

The agency said the 1:34 p.m. quake appeared to be an aftershock of the March 11 magnitude-9 earthquake that triggered a tsunami that left more than 15,600 people dead and nearly 5,000 missing.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Saturday’s quake did not cause any further damage at its crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

The quake’s magnitude was initially estimated at 6.5 but was revised downward a few hours later.
